Student of Top Investors

Bo Chew with a passion for investing, searched for the best process to produce excellent returns with less risk. The system had to have outstanding results, especially in volatile markets, recessions, and all time periods. It must be relevant, continually evolving, and underpinned by a discipline fostering daily improvement. In researching, Bo studied some of the world’s greatest managers’ investment processes including:

  • Warren Buffet (Berkshire Hathaway 19.8%/year return 1965 to 2023),
  • Peter Lynch (Fidelity Magellan 29%/year 1977 to 1990),
  • Jim Rogers (Quantum Fund 40%/year 1970 to 1980,
  • David Ryan 40%/year 1979 to 1988,
  • Mark Minervini 220%/year 1994 to 2000 with only 1 down quarter.

CAN SLIM and MarketSurge as Foundation

Bo Chew selected the highly successful Investor’s Business Daily’s CAN SLIM approach and MarketSurge trading platform as the foundation for his trading discipline – Seeking excellent returns with less risk through the active selection of leading stocks, using low-risk entries, limiting losses, letting winners run, realizing profits, and raising cash in difficult markets.

William O’Neill, founder of Investor’s Business Daily researched 100+ years of the greatest market winners to develop a proven top ranked trading system and extensive tools for money managers and investors. His students include David Ryan and Mark Minervini. O’Neil’s How to Make Money in Stocks Complete Investing System book details the CAN SLIM trading system, backed by an extensive study of the greatest stock market winners from 1880 to 2009.

  • CAN SLIM was the #1 ranked investment strategy according to independent real time studies of over 50 leading investing methods by the American Association of Independent Investors:
    1. CAN SLIM returned 24.1%/year versus the S&P 500’s 12.5%/year for the period of July 1st, 2011 to June 30th, 2021.
    2. CAN SLIM returned 35.3%/year versus the S&P 500’s 3.3%/year for the period of January 1st, 1998 to December 31st, 2009.
  • The CAN SLIM criteria:
    1. Current quarterly earnings per share >25% and accelerating.
    2. Annual earnings per share increasing >25%.
    3. New product or service fueling exceptional sales and earnings growth, new CEO, or new industry trend.
    4. Scarce stock supply from re-purchases and strong buying demand.
    5. Leading stock and industry, relative price strength >80 and rising, and stock near 52-week highs.
    6. Institutional sponsorship, increasing ownership by funds outperforming the market.
    7. Market direction: Up – new purchases | Sideways – caution | Down – defensive.

Portfolio Management

Bo Chew utilizes a 3-model portfolio trading platform to actively manage discretionary portfolios tailored to a client’s risk profile. Clients are invested according to 1 of 3 actively managed LFG Model Portfolios. The discipline and process ensure that every client portfolio is monitored daily, actively managed, and receive the same efficient trade execution.

LFG Model Portfolio focused dynamic composition

  • Top Funds: A mix of generally 8 complementary Funds and ETFs diversified by asset type, geography and investment methodology with a 3-5 year history of top quartile returns generated with less volatility. These tend to be income positions and highly rated alternative strategy and equity funds with a process to generate absolute or strong returns with less risk. Holding period is usually 6 – 12 months or longer.

  • Leading Stocks:  Concentrated Selection of generally 14 of the Most Relevant Leading Stocks actively bought and sold using CAN SLIM trading system and MarketSurge stock research platform as the foundation. Existing positions are reviewed daily as to whether to Hold or Sell. Leading stocks are reviewed daily for low risk set ups as to whether to Buy. Holding period is usually days and weeks to a few months.

June 2026, the Legacies Growth Fund was set up to hold these leading stocks. The Portfolio Manager will execute trades in leading stocks directly within the Fund rather than submitting and allocating trades across individual client accounts, and client accounts will hold units of the Fund instead. This approach improves trading and administrative efficiency and provides the Portfolio Manager greater flexibility in actively managing position size in leading stocks.

For Canadian dollar accounts, as the Portfolio Manager primarily trades U.S.-listed equities, the Fund’s separate U.S. dollar account and Canadian dollar unit pricing will eliminate client-account foreign exchange costs. In addition, for clients with non-registered investment accounts, tax reporting is simplified, and the Fund’s corporate class structure may provide tax advantages.  Most of the Portfolio Manager’s personal investment assets are expected to remain invested alongside unitholders in the Fund.

Buying and Selling the Most Relevant Leading Stocks

  • Risk mitigation, exiting losing positions, protecting gains, and locking in profits are at the heart of the dynamic process.
  • First is assessing the direction of stock markets and trading success. If markets are in uptrends, recent Buys and Sells are profitable, I‘ll likely be 100% invested and more active perhaps replacing 7 of the 14 positions in a week. If markets are volatile or sideways, I exercise greater caution, reduce the number of holdings and increase Cash. If markets are in downtrends, recent Buys become losses, and few leading stocks are setting up with low risk entries, I’ll limit new Buys and hold predominantly Cash.
  • I look to Buy companies with strong accelerating earnings and revenue growth, new products or services, and leading position in industries doing well. Besides great company fundamentals, the stock price is moving up in an orderly fashion, setting higher highs with higher lows, strong institutional buying, and top 10% in price performance. If the setup is good, I’ll Buy when strong volume pushes the price above a solid base and major resistance level.

  • Before a Buy is made, the Sell point is determined, usually where the price breaches a support level, often 3% to 8% below the Buy price. I’ll Sell if the price drops 10% from the Buy point, or subsequent highest daily close. Often I Sell if the stock isn’t moving much, drifts lower, or becomes volatile. I also Sell a stock acting orderly, so as to Buy another stock with a great set up.
  • If a stock has substantial gains, I may Sell to make a Buy that is setting up; and usually Sell ¼ or ½ to lock in profits, especially prior to earnings.

Our Three-Tier Platform

Bo Chew, manages Client Portfolios on a discretionary basis. If markets are doing well, Portfolios tend to be at the higher end of the equity range. Conversely, if markets are doing poorly, Portfolios are at the higher end of the cash and income range. Everyone in a given Profile has the same holdings, receiving the same price and timing on Buys and Sells.

1. Conservative Portfolio

For those who prioritize capital preservation and stable returns, our Conservative Portfolio focuses on low-risk investments and a low weighting to the most relevant leading stocks. This option is ideal for conservative clients and retirees seeking steady income with minimal exposure to market volatility.

The Portfolio is invested 60% to 100% in Cash and Income with a smaller 0% to 40% in Equities. The Portfolio is largely comprised of usually 6 complementary Funds and ETFs, more income and alternative strategy weighted. If fully invested, Leading Stocks generally represent 20% of the Portfolio book value via 10 Stocks x 2% Buy position size.

2. Balanced Portfolio

Our Balanced Portfolio offers a mix of growth and income opportunities. By diversifying across asset classes, with a moderate weighting to the most relevant leading stocks, we aim to achieve a moderate risk level while providing potential for higher returns. This option is suitable for clients who want a balanced approach to growth and stability.

The Portfolio is invested in a balanced range of 30% to 70% Income and 30% to 70% Equities. About two thirds of the Portfolio is allocated to 6 complementary Funds and ETFs. If fully invested, Leading Stocks generally represent 36% of the Portfolio book value via 12 Stocks x 3% Buy position size.

The Portfolio has a smaller 0% to 40% in Income and significant 40% to 90% in Equities.
